5 Modern Twists on the Kentucky Derby

julep derby

Sustainable Mint Julep- Filtered water, organic sugar**, farmers market mint. I would still suggest cutting the sugar in half, I know this may be considered julep blasphemy,  but it will still be quite sweet!

Fruity Ice Tea- An alternative to classic southern sweet tea. This version is refreshing and will still be sweet, but not so much that your teeth hurt.

Burgoo Stew- This classic stew is not for vegetarians and perhaps may be too meaty for some omnivores. This version seemed healthier than most, as there is a better balance of veggies and meat. One recipe I found had FIVE kinds of meat.

Henry Bain Sauce- No Derby party would be complete without this classic  all-purpose sauce. This recipe uses fruit preserves, marmalade, and horseradish.

Raw Chocolate Pecan Pie- It would be simple unheard of to have a derby day without chocolate pecan pie. This version will not only impress any southern belle with it's rich goodness, but it's actually good for you!
