Fictitious Twitter character Ruth Bourdain won a James Beard award this Friday May 6th in the category of humor writing, a new addition this year, and he/she did not show up to receive his/her award.
Social Media has brought anonymity to a new level. Ruth Bourdain (a name devised by the blending of former editor-in-chief of Gourmet Ruth Reichl and Anthony Bourdain) has created an androgynous persona entirely through his/her witty and often crude 140 word tweets.
It is obvious why he/she did not show up to the awards ceremony, it would have given her/him away; the anonymity is part of the attraction. This man or women is obviously not ready to give up the jig just yet. I suspect Ruth Bourdain has won over more followers on Twitter and riding the mystery wave for a little while longer.
