Beer is set to go where it has never gone before: outer space. Two Australian entrepreneurs are attempting to make beer for a zero-gravity environment. Jaron Mitchell of 4 Pines Brewing Company has partnered with Jason Held of space engineering firm Saber Astronautics Australia to engineer a beer specifically for space flight and space tourism.
Taking into account the loss of taste sensation that occurs in space, the duo have opted to make a stout that will "have a flavour that would be strong enough, that would punch through that." A prototype was tested on a zero-gravity flight over Florida with a microgravity expert as the guinea pig. The tester found it difficult to get the beer out of the bottle due to the lack of gravity, so Held and Mitchell are now trying to address that issue.
The Vostok Stout is available in Australia for those who want a drinks preview before buying their seats on a suborbital flight.
