Farmers Market On Wheels

May 21, 2011

Last week, we at Foodista, shared a story about mobile grocery truck idea that is working and working well, in New Mexico's food desert. Now, it seems that the farmers market in Northhampton, MA, will also be going mobile.

This coming Thursday, a bus will arrive at the Northhampton Senior Center, and offer fresh produce to all the residents. The farm that is providing the produce, Enterprise Farm, of Whately, has been growing certified organic vegetables since 1983. They are looking out for the interests of their future customers. The farm's Project Manager, Shelly Beck said:

The early offerings will likely include items such as asparagus, fiddleheads, lettuce and plants. At this time of year, some of the produce will be from farms farther south, she said. Local produce will be the main feature as the growing season here gets under way, Beck said. She also hopes to offer cut flowers as well

This seems like a win/win for the less mobile customers, and the farm itself. One of the hardest part of creating and working a sustainable farm, is getting the product to the customer. Here is a farm that does it in style.
