Many children get most of their nutrition from the school lunch (and breakfast) programs. What do they do when school is over for the summer?
In Omaha, NE, the problem is being addressed in a unique way. Starting June 6th, the Salvation Army will roll out two of their Disaster Relief trucks, after renaming them Kids Cruisin' Kitchens. These kid friendly vehicles will be stopping at the local parks, community centers and public pools, offering fully cooked lunches for up to 300 children.
In a city where 80% of the families qualify for reduced or free lunch, it is uncertain where these children would otherwise be getting their midday meal, without this inventive program. By bringing the meals to the children, the Salvation Army hopes to increase the number of children who take part in the program. Only 10% of the children who qualify for the reduced or free lunch program take advantage of the summer lunch service.
The Salvation Army of Omaha, is still looking for volunteers to help with this program. If you are interested, find them on Facebook or contact Kay at 402-898-6000 to volunteer.
