Historically, in California, if you were a convicted drug felon, you were not eligible for Federal assistance, such as food stamps. A new bill, referred to as AB 828, is one step closer to changin the rules. The state Assembly approved legislation to lift the ban, 46-30. Now, AB 828 to go to the Senate for approval.
My take on this, is that although there are people who misuse the system (a main concern for those opposed), the majority do not. If these people are trying to turn their lives around and stay clean/sober, reducing stress as much as possible in their everyday lives is only going to help them. Giving them a way to eat, their family a way to eat, will go a long ways towards providing two basic necessities of life: Food and self respect.
