Mary's Gone Crackers has been a staple in my gluten free existence for many years. Unlike typical gluten free products, this one is made with whole grains and seeds and doesn't contain additives and processed ingredients. In honor of National Celiac Awareness Month, it seemed fitting that I probe the mind behind the crackers.
Mary went gluten free due to lifelong health issues including depression, joint and digestive pain. Doctors were no help, and even told her that it was all in her head. Finally, in 1994, a chiropractor connected the dots and advised her to go gluten free. After a month-long elimination of gluten, she reintroduced it and became even sicker. That was all the convincing that she needed. After about a year, her 40 years of health issues cleared up and she felt like a new person. People told her that she looked ten years younger and she had more energy than ever.
I was also curious how she came up with such a nutrient dense product, when so many others are simply junk food. Due to her may health issues, Mary educated herself about nutrition and ate an organic diet even before going gluten free. She wanted the crackers to meet her level of standards, and so a nutritious and healthy cracker was born.
Mary's favorite way to eat the crackers? She likes to make mini sandwiches with cucumber, goat cheese, and avocado, or use for dipping with hummus, pesto, and spreads. The Sticks and Twigs, which are the best "pretzel" that I've ever tasted are delicious straight out of the bag.
The latest addition to the Mary's family are the cookies which are sweetened with coconut palm sugar (the sustainable variety). These tasty cookies also contain chia seeds which are loaded with omega-3's So even if you aren't gluten free, check out one of my favorite line of guilt-free snacks and treats!! Thanks, Mary!
