President Obama simply can't catch a break on his trip to the United Kingdom. The latest embarrassing moment occurred at a royal dinner held in his honor on Tuesday evening. Obama was offering a toast to the Queen when the trouble began.
"To her majesty the Queen," Obama began. But the orchestra mistook his hesitation after that line for the end of his remarks. They began playing "God Save the Queen" (or "My Country ‘Tis of Thee” to you Americans out there), which is the national anthem.
Obama, however, finished his toast, "the vitality of the special relationship between our peoples and for the words of Shakespeare to this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England. To the Queen." He turned to her and raised his glass, but the Queen stared straight ahead for the national anthem. Obama, to his credit, put his glass down and waited until the end of the anthem before finishing the toast.
Awkward.
