Drinking non-alcoholic wheat beer has been found to benefit the health of athletes according to a new study of marathoners by the Department of Preventative and Rehabilitative Sports Medicine of the Technische Universitaet Muenchen at Klinikum rechts der Isar. The double-blind study had athletes chugging up to 1.5 liters of either beer or a placebo drink per day. The wheat beer, or weissbier, helped to reduce inflammation in runners after a marathon, and also limited the intensity of infections. Aromatic polyphenol compounds are believed to be responsible for the beer's health benefits.
