Holocaust victims share the stories of how they survived the cruelty of the Nazis. Included in their heartbreaking stories are the dishes that sustained them until they were freed. Author June Feiss Hersh diligently searched for over 80 Holocaust survivors from Poland, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and Greece. Hersh interviewed them one by one about their unforgettable experience in Nazi camps. Not only tearful and remarkable tales were extracted from the survivors but also personal and family recipes that were cherished and handed down from generation to generation. She compiled these stories and recipes into a cookbook now known as Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival.
The Holocaust was a horrendous event where over six million European Jews were massacred by the Nazis. Other groups were seized for hiding the Jews and various other reasons. They, too, were brought into concentration camps to be used as slave laborers until they died of exhaustion or illness. Survivors recalled how their favorite dishes became the important tools to keep them going. With nothing to eat in the camp, since the Nazis scarcely fed them, they often thought of food and recipes. They remembered how their native dishes were exactly prepared and recorded it down to preserve the recipes.
Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival has provided its readers original and improved recipes that are easy to cook at home. These dishes will truly remind us of the very touching story—from hardship and survival to victory—of each Holocaust survivor who created them.

Fascinating, not an angle of the Holocaust I've heard about before. Thanks for sharing.
