When you are thinking about thrifty food shopping, don't forget the bones! Bones are more than something to throw away after you finish a meal. In reality, you are wasting a most flavorful part of the cut of meat. Many cooks have realized that leaving the bone in, results in more taste, but may not realize that starting with only bones can also make a tasty meal. Here are 4 ways you can use bones to add flavor and nutrition to your diet:
Roast them for stock
Do you know that a roasting pan of beef bones cost pennies, and after a few hours roasting, results in a rich beef broth? This is a great way to feed your family without the cost of a large piece of meat. I like to roast my bones and then remove the spent bones and use that liquid as a base for barley soup . Soup bones are so inexpensive and make such a luxurious food, I urge you to go out and stock up on this delicious food for your family.
Serve Marrow Bones
Many people realize that eating a fat free, imitation food diet is not healthy. Roasting marrow bones will bring everyone to the table. Words can not express how rich and satisfying these are. Seriously good eats.
Roasted Soup Bones
No longer will you look at a carcass and think it is finished. Start thinking of the meals you can make once you roast those bones and bring out every bit of delicious flavor. Try it!
Use As A Flavoring
I add a roasted bone to my rice as it cooks. Remove it just before serving.
