What To Drink With Fried Green Tomato Sandwiches

June 25, 2011

The first seasonal tomatoes are showing up and I am eager to celebrate. While I do love them fresh-sliced with a bit of mozzarella, sometimes a more substantial craving deserves a fried green tomato sandwich. This recipe is a take on a BLT with an extra crunch of cornmeal and the warmed tomato tasting almost meaty. Leave off the bacon for a vegetarian treat, and get yourself a good drink. Here are some fun ones to try:

Malvasia
The malvasia family shows up all over the Mediterranean, from Madeira to Spain to Italy and beyond. The white wines can be rich but fresh, with fleshy nutty notes and a hint of sweetness to complement the smoky bacon and fried tomato.

Sherry
A dry and salty fino or manzanilla sherry has enough richness from its fortification to meld with the heavy flavors in this sandwhich, but some laser-like acidity will bring balance.

Zweigelt
This red grape from Austria is light with fresh berry flavors and a sprinkling of pepper and spice on the nose. Perfect for pinot noir and gamay fans, Zweigelt will love the earthy pesto and juicy tomato in this recipe.

Beer
A hoppy but crisp pale ale will highlight the herbs and veggies while cutting through the grease, but a silky cream ale will accentuate the fatty goodness.
