NY Greenmarket Bans Open Air Cheese Cutting

June 28, 2011

If you have shopped at the Greenmarket in NY lately,  you may have noticed the addition of plastic. Plastic wrapping on your previously fresh sliced cheeses, that is.

The state Ag Department is enforcing a ban on open air cheese cutting. Shoppers would normally be able to slice off the cheese amount they wanted and it was weighed and wrapped. No more. Now, unless cut in a permanent building that "excludes pests and has a three compartment sink."

There have been 23,000  Article 20-C licences granted in NY State. These licenses are  required for open air cheese cutting. Not one has ever been issued to a vendor at an outdoor market.

Well, there you go. This blogger would invite the NY State Ag Department to go into their local Walmart super store and look up. I will bet $1.00 that there are at least 1 or 2 wild  birds flying somewhere in the rafters. Isn't that unclean? Just a thought.
