In a perfect, free-market economy, no food would be subsidized by the government. Instead, we live in an era where it's better business to make food in a lab than grow it in the sunshine. And sometimes it seems like nothing can be done to change that. It's hard to argue business people out of making money, after all. But Jennifer La Rue Huget wrote a great piece for the Washington Post that calls on us to vote for better, healthier food where it matters most, the grocery store checkout.
At the end of the column La Rue Huget talks about how “Eat, Drink and Be Healthy” author Georgia Orcutt talked to her own children about making sound food choices.
“’Your dollar is a vote,” she told them, explaining that she was “not going to vote for those foods” by buying junk. “They got it right away,” she says, and began making their own healthful choices with their allowances.’”
She goes on to say that she's not suggesting never splurging on junk, but keeping that idea in mind is a great way to enforce making good choices. Nice idea, right?
