The Do at the View restaurant in Atlanta has a novel way of staying afloat in a stagnant economy: it's essentially replaced servers with iPads. An iPad sits at each table; customers can use a custom app developed for the restaurant to place their order, check out the menu and even alert the valet when they're ready to leave.
The iPad integration has enabled Do at the View to essentially do away with its servers. A food runner/busser brings food to the tables and clears empty plates. Managers can control various aspects of the restaurant's environment, such as music, lighting and the video backgrounds that line the walls; the iPad app also provides back-of-the-house data like order tracking, inventory control and sales statistics.
