Dole Food Company is allegedly destroying rainforest in Sri Lanka to create a banana plantation. The 11,600 acre plantation, will impact an elephant migration route and a number of tropical species.
The local company that is doing the work, Letsgrow, has already cleared almost half the area.
No officials have been allowed into the plantation, so the exact amount of area that is destroyed remains a mystery. No Environment Impact Assessment has ever been made.
To add another facet to the issue, since Sri Lanka has just come out of a 30 year civil war, it is imperative that the country find something to improve the economic situation of it people. This development would mean much needed income and jobs, but at what cost?
