A small bakery in Newport News, Virginia raised nearly $12,000 for the family of an 11-year-old boy killed during Hurricane Irene. Zahir Robinson was killed when a tree fell into his house as he took a nap with his mother.
Though they had no direct connection to the family, Couture Cakes by Nika decided to hold a fundraiser because they were touched by Zahir's story. The store stayed open on Sunday and Monday last week and donated all revenue to the family. They donated their time and the ingredients to make the food.
"The door stayed open for those two days," said co-owner George Covington. "This thing really came together. We want to say 'Thank you' to everybody."
