The Atlantic's Derek Anderson recently posted a graph showing how much Americans eat annually, broken down into individual types of food. The news is horrifying.
We eat way too many unhealthy foods. Chief among them is corn syrup. Americans consume 42 pounds of the stuff in any given year. What does that mean? Good breaks down that number. Keep in mind that women should consume no more than 6 teaspoons a day and men should not exceed 9.
Forty-two pounds [of corn syrup] is the equivalent of 3,865 teaspoons of corn syrup, or almost 11 per day. Nobody should be eating that much added sugar.
Among the other foods we eat to excess:
- 85.5 pounds of fats and oils
- 110 pounds of red meat
- 141.6 pounds of caloric sweeteners
- 23 pounds of pizza
- 29 pounds of french fries
- 53 gallons of soda
- 2,736 pounds of sodium (47 percent more than recommended)
- 273.2 pounds of fruit
