Montana Representative and US Senate candidate Denny Rehberg (R-Montana) promised to crack down on fraudulent claims to free or reduced priced school lunches during a visit to his sister's elementary school in Billings, Montana.
Though he did not cite any specific figures, Rehberg said he wanted to "punish those systems that rip the taxpayers off."
Rehberg's sister and school official Brenda Koch replied that a random sample of families on the program were audited annually to make sure they meet eligibility requirements. They also emphasized that the money was "critical" for their schools.
The federal government spends less than $1 billion on the school lunch program across the country annually.
