At the age of 19, Mayim Bialik decided to become a vegetarian. But, after she had kids, The Big Bang Theory actress decided to get rid of all animal products from her diet.
"I was vegetarian from age 19 until I got pregnant with my first son in 2005. He was allergic to dairy in my breast milk so I cut it out. After Fred was born, I read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and it convinced me that it was worth it to go ‘all the way,’ and so I eliminated eggs and all trace dairy (like in baked goods and my beloved candy bars I indulged in from time to time)," Bialik said. "My love for animals since childhood feels complete now that I am vegan, and it feels really right for every reason: health, ethical, environmental…It is an amazing lifestyle and I find it easy and inexpensive. Our boys eat a variety of foods that many kids have never heard of, and they also get sweets and fun foods in their lives, too. We make it work because it matters to us to do it, even if it’s sometimes challenging."
Bialik's favorite vegan dish is a Mexican casserole that she can "hide a lot of vegetables in." It has layers of beans and vegan cheese and even when she slips some kale into the dish, her kids never notice the difference.
