Empanadas are the Latin American version of a hand pie. They are usually filled with some kind of protein, mainly pork, beef, or chicken, onions, garlic, and a myriad of spices. The mixture is placed within the dough and is sealed using an empanada maker (found online or kitchenware stores) or with a good ol' fork. You can choose to bake these savory pies or, like in this version, deep fry them. If you decide to bake them, remember to brush each pie with egg wash (egg and a teaspoon of water) to create a beautiful glaze. Empanadas freeze beautifully so make extra for later. Empanadas are a delicious savory snack that can be enjoyed anytime of the day.
