World Cup Game Day Food: German Bratwurst Pizza

July 10, 2014

If you have been following the World Cup, you know that the last two teams left to duke it out for the championship title are Argentina and Germany.  This pizza was created with the German fans in mind. Store bought pizza crust is slathered in apricot preserves and loaded with onion, sauerkraut, Monterey Jack cheese and authentic German bratwurst.

Bratwurst is a traditional German sausage made from pork, veal or a mixture of both.  Unlike Italian sausage, bratwurst is more subtly flavored and usually seasoned with caraway seed, nutmeg, ginger, and sometimes garlic.  You can cook the brats on the grill or simmer them in German beer.  For this recipe, the sausage is mixed with the onion and sauerkraut before it tops the pizza.

Pop a couple of these German bratwurst pizzas before Sunday's final match.

1 can (13.8 oz) Pillsbury™ refrigerated classic pizza crust
1/3 cup SMUCKER'S® Apricot Preserves
8 oz uncooked bratwurst links (original flavor), casings removed
1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
1 cup well-drained sauerkraut (from 14-oz can)
1 1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese (6 oz)

Heat oven to 400°F. Spray 12-inch pizza pan with CRISCO® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray. Unroll pizza crust dough on pan; press dough to edge of pan. Bake 8 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. Brush preserves over dough; set aside.

Spray 10-inch skillet with CRISCO® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray. Add sausage, onion and sauerkraut; cook over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally and breaking up sausage, until sausage is no longer pink. Remove sausage mixture with slotted spoon; spoon evenly over preserves on crust. Sprinkle cheese over top.

Bake 13 to 19 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown.
