Caramelized French Toast for Mother's Day

No mother is going to turn away breakfast in bed, especially if caramelized French toast is on the menu.  What sets this French toast recipe apart from all others is the wonderful caramel sauce.  After the bread slices have been dipped and pan fried, they are finished in a sweet and sticky brown sugar sauce, reminiscent of the sauce that surrounds a cinnamon roll or sticky bun.  If you (or your mother) has a strong sweet tooth, you can finish off the dish with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and butter.  I like to serve mine with fresh fruit to balance the intense sweetness of the caramel sauce.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons butter, divided
6 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/8 teaspoon salt
8 slices bread
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
