Many people believe that lasagna originated in Italy, but the Romans may have borrowed the original dish from the Greeks. The word lasagna refers to the cooking vessel, not the dish itself.
The Greeks also had flat strips of dough that were cut into strips and referred to as laganon.
A recipe for lasagna was featured in the first cookbook written in England, but because of earlier Greek and Roman uses, the dish did not originate there.
