Gaglioppo Grapes

About

The Gaglioppo grape is a very deep purple, almost black grape and is used primarily in the creation of red wines. The Gaglioppo is grown in the southern part of Italian peninsula in an area called Calabria. Ripening occurs late in the season, in the beginning of October. The climate of Calbria is hot and dry, which helps the Gaglippo to completely ripen. The vine of the Gaglioppo grape is strong and vigourous creating a grape that contains an elevated sugar level while maintaining a medium acidity level. The grape has an average oval shape, waxy skin and contains two seeds within the grape. It is considered part of the ancient grape variety, being compared often to the Barolo with how the grape looks and tastes. Once made into a wine, Gaglippo tends to be a light color. It is said to have flavors such as licorice and mixed berries.
