Germany has approved a potato trial using a GMO potato called Amflora.
Amflora has been modified to produce starch, used in the making of paper, adhesives, construction and cosmetics. The makers of the Amflora potato, BASF, refer to it as a starch potato developed specifically for industrial use.
A spokesperson for the German ministry is quoted as saying:
Amflora poses no danger for human health or the environment
Unfortunately, Amflora carries a gene for antibiotic resistance, particularly the antibiotics used to treat Tuberculosis. .
