Mashed potatoes were one of those easily repeated accidents of cooking that first reportedly occurred thousands of years ago. Potatoes have a long history as a staple and were usually thrown on fires to cook. Those that fell apart were usually collected and mixed with other foods to hold them together. Eventually, they decided to do the potatoes alone.
