Question: Rutabagas and/or turnips

January 13, 2011
What's you favorite way to cook either one or both? Thanks

Personally, I like them steamed & mashed. (It's a childhood thing), but they are great roasted in parchment paper with a little butter and garlic- they get a nice little caramelization that way. They're especially good if you roasted them along with carrots. Baby turnips are great in salad. The turnips greens are really good sauteed too.

I love them in soup as a puree or even in chunks in a stew with lamb or beef.

Rutabagas and larger turnips my favorite way is with other root veggies and roasted. I made a great roasted root veggie recipe a few times, I marinated them in garlic, olive oil, rosemary, balsamic vinegar, and a little brown sugar over night and cooked them at 400F until tender. (just cut the veggies up to be about an inch cube, adjust how much marinade you use to how many veggies, it just has to coat. I like to do things by taste.)

Now baby turnips, I just love them in many ways. I like them cut up and added to my stir fry. Once I sliced them thin, cooked them in a little butter with a garlic herb spice blend and it was wonderful. Even my non veggie eating husband has been asking for them again.
I even like them just cut up in match stick slices and dipped raw in hummus.
Baby turnips are the best way to introduce someone to turnips.

I steam mine (along with cauliflower) then use an immersion blender to make a mash. Season with salt, pepper, some cream cheese. This is my substitute for mashed potatoes - all the flavor but without the heaviness.
