Question: Should You Eat Fruit Alone?

January 27, 2010
I don't mean by yourself, but I've heard that fruit should be eaten without other foods, that something happens to it in your stomach. Is this true?

Frugivore is the word used in biology to define a fruit eater (frutitarian seems to be commonly used). Eating fruits only, as with any other very restrictive diet, may lead to severe and important nutrient defficiencies, like calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin B12, among several others. The biological evidence (anatomy and physiology of the gastro-intestinal tract) points towards omnivori (omni=all, vorare=to devour) as the best diet for the human beings.

I heard that you should eat fruit in the morning on an empty stomach. Because, as the fruit breaks down it will ferment. Sounds right? I've always eaten fruit throughout the day and never had a problem. As we get older, that could become a problem. I think this question is for our nutritionist friends.

Eating fruit between meals is encouraged instead of trashy snacks that just supply fat and sugar. Having a total diet of fruits might not be the best for our health as we would be lacking other esential vitimins, minerals and proteins. Like everything, even fruit in moderation.

5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day is ideal. (Canadas' Food Guide)
