I've had good experience with Canon Rebel XS and Panasonic Lumix TZ4. Canon S95 is supposed to be very good too.

I love my Nikon Coolpix. It's amazing what a difference a tripod and natural light make.

There are some online guides and courses that you can view that will give you great tips. We belong to Lynda.com which offers a wide variety of tutorials and online classes, in every imaginable topic. They have some great photography tutorials.
Also try you tube- this is a good video (and free)

Panasonic makes a great digital camera, The Panasonic Lumix ZS6.
It shoots both pictures & Video, has a 3" LCD screen, 12.1 Megapixels,
12x optical zoom with a 16x intelligent zoom, and optical stabilization. It's a great bargain for under $300. I have several as we use them in our business. The photos are great! We also have a very expensive digital SLR, but most of what we shoot comes from the Panasonic. If you are a Costco member look online or in the store for the best pricing.

I would say get a digital SLR because you can play around with focus and the type of lens you can use. But you don't really need a fancy camera to take good photos of food because you'll be near the subject anyway when taking photo, so a normal digital camera will do as well. Just use the macro setting for added sharpness and detail definition.
When getting a digital camera, take note of the megapixels and if it has a macro setting. (most do have that setting anyway) I hope this helped. :)

Any point and shoot camera will do. One great way to use it is to turn off the flash and use natural sunlight as your source of light.
