Is it best to use butter or crisco? What about baking powder/soda?

This may sound odd- but a friend gave me a little clay "brown sugar bear"
You can buy them on Amazon for about $4.50
They help to keep your brown sugar moist. I tried mine with some lemon-cheesecake cookies once- It seemed to work. Normally I like my cookies crispy- but this recipe - I wanted soft.

In Baking the best thing to do is to follow the recipe. Use the ingredients the recipe specificies. If the recipe gives you a choice then you can decide what you'd like to use. Under baking the cookies a bit will keep them soft.

Thanks for the tips.

I found the best way to keep cookies on the softer side is to add 1 teaspoon of clear corn syrup to the cookie dough when mixing. It works.

I agree with Curt on the underbaking. If you underbake them by about two minutes they will be softer. How you store your cookies after baking affects them also. Store soft cookies in a container that is not completely airtight. Keep a piece of fresh bread in the container and the cookies will absorb moisture from the bread.

I found the best way to keep cookies soft, even those crunchy oatmeal cookies, is to keep them in a ziplock bag. It works in the Nevada dessert and should work elsewhere.
