Snap the ends off the green beans, break into desired lengths. Place in large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat so it stays at a steady simmer, cook and stir occasionally for about 1 hour. Add the bacon and salt to taste and continue to cook for about 30 minutes or until the beans are tender.
