Linkev's Corned Beef and Cabbage

4 pounds corned beef flat cut
6 potatoes peeled and cut in half crosswise
1 cabbage cut in small wedges
2 onions cut in wedges
6 carrots peeled and cut to 3- inch pieces
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
1 1/2 tablespoons garlic powder
dash of ground black pepper to taste

Remove corned beef from package and rinse under cold water. Place it in a large enough pot and cover with cold water.Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about one hour.Poke a few times the corned beef on both sides with a fork add paprika and garlic powder and simmer for 1 and a half hour.Add potatoes, onion and carrots, simmer for half hour then add the cabbage and simmer until all vegetables are tender.

Like my chicken soup, I used to cook the corned beef plain because my husband was used to plain cooking, one day I decided to add a few spices of my own without telling him, since then I cook it my way. My husband is Irish so now when I invite his family over for my corned beef they love it.
