Almond Jam Bars

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup milk
3/4 cup jam of your choice

Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder and spices. Cut shortening into flour mixture until mixture resembles crumbs.

Mix egg and milk; add to flour mixture. Add flavoring or add flavorings to egg and milk before mixing with flour mixture. Spread 1/3 into greased 8 inch square pan. Cover with jam.

Spread remaining flour mixture over jam- it doesn't have to be perfectly spread. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes.

Cool and cut into bars.

Raspberry jam works very well with the almonds, though use a jam of your choice Optional: sprinkle slivered almonds, shredded coconut or chocolate chips before baking.
