[edit] Ingredients

cup Moong dal

2

tablespoons oil

1

onion, chopped

1

teaspoon garlic, minced

1

teaspoon ginger, minced

1

a pinch asafoetida

a few curry leaves

¾

cup tomato purée

salt, to taste

¼

teaspoon turmeric

2

green chilli

lime juice, to taste

Step 1

Wash dal and soak it for half an hour.

Step 2

Add curry leaves and pressure cook up to one whistle.

Step 3

Heat oil, add onion and stir-fry till golden brown.

Step 4

Add garlic, ginger, asafoetida and stir-fry for a minute.

Step 5

Add tomato purée and cook till water evaporates.

Step 6

Add seasonings and stir-fry for a few minutes.

Step 7

Add this mixture and the slit green chillies to the cooked dal.

Step 8

Add lime juice to taste. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes

This recipe also needs also tempering

For Tempering

Ingredients
1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
1 tsp cumin seeds
3 red chillies
1/4 tsp garam masala
a few coriander leaves
fried onions

Method for Tempering

Heat ghee (clarified butter), add cumin seeds, red chillies, chilli powder, garam masala and pour over the ready dal.
Garnish with fried onions and coriander leaves.
