Greek Dessert Cake

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
5 eggs, separated
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
3 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups water

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine sugar and water to make a syrup. Bring to boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Cream butter and sugar, add egg yolks and continue beating. Sift flour, baking powder, soda and spices together. Combine with egg yolk mixture. Add orange juice, orange rind and walnuts.

Beat egg whites until stiff and gently fold into the batter. Pour into greased 9x13 inch pan and bake for 30 minutes. Remove cake, pour cool syrup over the hot cake. Cut and serve when cold.
