That purple orb you see in the supermarket is an eggplant, not to be mistaken as an alien egg (yes, I have heard this before). The eggplant is part of the nightshade family and is closely related to the tomato and the potato. This fruit is native to India but almost exclusively used in savory dishes. Eggplants do well when they are fried, roasted, grilled, or stewed. Take advantage of the eggplant this summer, you may find that it is your new favorite fruit-vegetable.
