You can not make this stuff up. In an ironic twist of timing, the International Sprout Growers Association announced the launch of International Sprout Health & Wellness Month, for the month of June.
Our family has eaten sprouts for years. I even sprout wheat in the winter for my livestock. I do not, however, buy sprouts from the market. They are the sort of food that has so many ways to go wrong. The very benefit that they offer a person nutritionally, is the same thing that makes them so susceptible to problems.
To celebrate International Sprout Health & Wellness Month, I urge you to grow your own sprouts at home. Here are a couple of places to purchase seeds specifically for sprouting.
Johnny's Selected Seeds
Their seeds are untreated and have tested negative for the presence of E.Coli 0157 and Salmonella.
Sprout People
Their site claims that their seeds have been tested and found free of pathogenic bacteria.
Depending on the variety of seed you are sprouting, there is a little bit of difference in soaking time and actual sprout time, but the idea is the same: Soak seeds in warm water, drain, rinse, repeat. It really is that simple. There is not need to take a chance by buying sprouts at a store. Grow your own!
