Ice Cream Truck Driver Shot and Killed, Highlights Violence Against Food Vendors

July 13, 2011

Just after selling ice cream to Dayton, Ohio neighborhood kids, 60-year-old ice cream truck driver Carl Banks was shot and killed, the Dayton Daily News reports. Banks was found dead behind the wheel after his ice cream truck struck a nearby home.

Just yesterday, we published a report from the Kansas City Star that talks about the dangers food truck drivers and vendors face out on the road alone. Is this the start of the larger trend?

The Dayton homicide detectives are investigating the murder. Neighborhood residents are outraged over the killing of man that had been a fixture in their neighborhood for years.

Even Dayton Police Sargeant John Sullivan said, “Who does a thing like that? It would seem like an ice cream truck would be a safe haven."
