Actually the best option would be to use a butter knife. With the butter knife make a few figure eight designs into the batter. You can use a toothpick, but because it is so much smaller it will take much more time. Also it is shorter, if you're using a deeper pan, there is a possibility that you won't be able to go deep enough. It is possible though to use a toothpick. If the cake is not too deep, then starting at one end of the pan make small swirls or coils until you get to the other end of the pan.
