  • vanilla ice cream or whipped cream(optional)
  • 2 large McIntosh apples
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup sugar plus 1 tablespoon
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into bits
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Combine flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl and stir well.

Add butter to the flour mixture and blend until it resembles coarse meal.

Stir in 1 cup of the sugar, the large lightly beaten egg, and enough milk to form a soft, spreadable dough.

Butter a 9-inch glass pie plate. Spread half of the dough evenly in the bottom and up the sides of the prepared pie plate, creating a 1-inch deep crust.

Peel, core, and chop the large McIntosh apples into 1/2-inch pieces. Mound the chopped apples in the pie plate over the dough and sprinkle with the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar.

Dab the remaining dough over the apples and spread as evenly as possible to cover.

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cake for 50 minutes or until golden brown.
