Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 pounds good cooking apples
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice

Instructions

1

Step 1

Cut the apples into eight pieces. Do not peel or core them, but cut out any damaged parts.

2

Step 2

20-30 minutes

Place the cut apples in a large pot. Add the apple cider vinegar and water. Cover the pot, bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook until the apples are soft. Remove from heat.

3

Step 3

Ladle the cooked apple mixture through a food mill, positioning a large bowl underneath to catch the smooth apple pulp.

4

Step 4

Transfer the apple pulp to a slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients (dark brown sugar, sugar, cinnamon, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, kosher salt, ground allspice) and mix well to combine.

5

Step 5

5-6 hours

Cook the apple butter in the slow cooker on HIGH, uncovered, stirring every 30 minutes or so.

6

Step 6

Preserve the apple butter by canning it in pint jars according to manufacturer's directions, or freeze it in freezer-safe containers.
