  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1/2 cup Cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable shortening
  • 1 Egg, beaten slightly
  • 3/4 cup Milk
  • Oil
  • 8 Frankfurters, cut into thirds

Step 1

Combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

With a pastry blender, cut vegetable shortening into the flour mixture until fine crumbs form. Add the beaten egg and milk, then blend well. Pour vegetable oil to a 2-inch depth in a deep fryer or large saucepan and heat to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pat the frankfurters dry with paper towels. Insert a toothpick into the center of each frankfurter piece. Dip each frankfurter piece into the batter and then into the hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
