- 2 medium Rome apples
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cold unsalted butter, cut into bits
Instructions
Step 1
Position an oven rack in the middle and preheat the oven to 375°F.
Step 2
Peel and halve the apples, then core them (preferably using a melon-ball cutter).
Step 3
Cut the apples into thin slices and toss them with lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar in a bowl.
Step 4
Divide the apples among individual baking dishes (such as ramekins), overlapping the slices, and sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon of water.
Step 5
Bake on a baking sheet until the apples are crisp-tender.
Step 6
Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, stir together the oats, cinnamon, salt, and the remaining tablespoon of brown sugar until combined. Rub the cold butter into the oat mixture to create the topping until evenly distributed.
Step 7
Sprinkle the topping over the apples and bake until the topping is golden. Transfer the dishes to a rack to cool at least 10 minutes.
Step 8
Serve warm or at room temperature.
