  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Step 1

Blend flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Cut fat into dry ingredients until fat is cut into pieces the size of rice kernels. Sprinkle water evenly over dry ingredients tossing with a fork until all portions are evenly dampened. Press mixture into a ball.

Place ball of dough on lightly floured, cloth-covered board. Roll dough from center outward, keeping pastry as round as possible, about 1/8 inch thick. Arrange in 9-inch pie pan.

If pastry shell is to be pre-baked before filling, prick bottom and sides with fork tines. Bake at 450 degrees until lightly browned.
