  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1-1/2 squares 1-ounce unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1-1/2 squares 1-ounce unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1-1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
  • as needed orange or yellow frosting(optional)

Instructions

Step 1

Melt shortening and 1-1/2 squares of 1-ounce unsweetened chocolate in a 2-quart saucepan.

Blend in brown sugar, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla.

Add remaining ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and chopped pecans); mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet.

8 to 10 minutes

Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Let stand for 1 minute; remove from sheet. Cool completely and then frost.

To make the chocolate icing, melt together butter, 1-1/2 squares of 1-ounce unsweetened chocolate, and milk. Stir in confectioner's sugar. If necessary, thin with additional milk until of spreading consistency.
