  • 12 cups chopped, unpeeled apples
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup apple cider
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Combine apples and apple cider in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on low until apples are soft.

1 to 2 hours

Puree the cooked apple mixture using a food sieve or food mill. Return the pureed mixture to the slow cooker; add sugar, cinnamon, and ground cloves. Cover and cook on low.

For a thicker apple butter, uncover the slow cooker and cook on high until desired consistency is reached, stirring occasionally.

10 minutes

Store the apple butter in the refrigerator or, for canning, pour the hot apple butter into hot canning jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Adjust caps and process in a boiling water bath.
