- 3.75 cup sifted flour
- powdered sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/2 package yeast
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1/2 cup boiling water
Instructions
Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, pour boiling water over shortening, sugar, and salt. Add evaporated milk and let the mixture stand until warm. In a separate small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the dissolved yeast and beaten egg to the warm milk mixture. Stir in 2 cups of the sifted flour. Beat the mixture well. Gradually add enough remaining sifted flour to make a soft dough. Cover the dough with waxed paper and a cloth; chill until ready to use.
Step 2
On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Do not let the dough rise before frying. Cut the dough into squares. In a deep pot or deep fryer, heat fat to 360°F (180°C). Fry a few dough squares at a time until golden brown on one side, then turn and brown on the other side. Remove from fat, drain on a cooling rack or paper towels, and immediately sprinkle with powdered sugar.
