  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg yolk egg yolk
  • 3/4 cup butterscotch sauce
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butterscotch sauce (for topping)

Instructions

Step 1

In a saucepan, combine water and white sugar. Cook the mixture over high heat without stirring. Let the water evaporate. Once the sugar has thickened and turned light brown, add 1/2 cup butter and whisk until smooth. Then add heavy cream and vanilla extract and whisk again until smooth and thick. Pour the butterscotch sauce into a jar and refrigerate.

In a bowl, combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, baking powder, 2 tablespoons sugar, and dry yeast. Set aside.

Heat 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup butter until very warm. Gradually add this warm mixture to the flour mixture.

Beat the mixture for 2 minutes at medium speed.

Add the egg yolk and another 1/2 cup all-purpose flour. Beat for 2 minutes at high speed.

Add the remaining 1 cup all-purpose flour to make a stiff batter.

Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.

In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Roll the dough using the chocolate chips, cinnamon, and sugar mixture as a dusting.

Sprinkle the rolled dough with 1/2 cup of the chocolate chips, cinnamon, and sugar mixture.

Fold the ends of the dough over the center (like folding a letter).

Repeat the rolling, sprinkling, and folding procedure two more times using the chocolate mixture.

Finally, place the dough in an 8x8-inch square baking pan lined with wax paper.

Spread 1/2 cup butterscotch sauce on top of the dough.

Let the dough rest for 10 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.
