Ingredients
- 2 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 teaspoon butter
- 3/4 cup milk
Instructions
Step 1
Sift dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder) together.
Step 2
Work butter into the dry ingredients with fingertips.
Step 3
Gradually add milk, mixing with a knife until a dough is formed.
Step 4
Turn the dough out onto a floured board. Pat and roll the dough to 1/2 inch thickness.
Step 5
Shape dumplings using a biscuit cutter, first dipping the cutter in flour.
Step 6
Place dumplings closely together in a buttered steamer (a perforated tin pie plate may be used in place of steamer). Position the steamer over a kettle of boiling water, cover closely, and steam for twelve minutes.
Step 7
For an alternative cooking method for stew, use a little more milk in the dough mixture. Drop the dough by spoonfuls directly onto the top of a stew. Ensure some of the stew liquid is removed so the dumplings rest on the meat and potato, rather than settling into the liquid.
